When Deodorant Stops Working: What My Memaw Taught Me About Perimenopause and Body Odor
“You can smell yourself before anybody else can.”
That’s what my Memaw used to say, usually with a knowing look and a raised eyebrow. It was her way of teaching self-awareness and self-respect, with just a little Southern sass.
But I’ll be honest… lately, I’ve been wondering: What in the world is going on with my deodorant? I mean, I’ve used the same brand for years. Never had an issue. And now? Halfway through the day, I’m checking my underarms like I forgot to put it on.
The truth is—this isn’t about my deodorant at all.
It’s about perimenopause.
What I didn’t know until I started doing this work (and living it myself) is that hormone fluctuations, especially the drop in estrogen and changes in cortisol, can actually alter your sweat glands and body odor. Stress sweat increases. Your body’s natural scent changes. And suddenly… you smell different. Sometimes stronger. Sometimes like a stranger. And it can mess with your confidence.
But here’s what makes me speak up about it:
I wasn’t warned. I wasn’t told this was coming. No one at the doctor’s office ever said, “Oh, by the way, you might notice your deodorant doesn’t work like it used to.”
That silence? That’s what makes women feel like they’re falling apart or worse, like they’re doing something wrong.
So let me say this clearly:
🧕🏾 You’re not broken.
🧬 Your hormones are shifting.
💬 And you’re not alone.
This is why I advocate so hard for transparent, whole-person care. Because it’s the little things like body odor, that can spiral into shame if we’re not naming them out loud. And women deserve better.
Have you noticed this change in yourself or your patients?
Let’s start telling the whole story of perimenopause—so no one’s caught off guard by their own scent again. 💛
Let’s keep this conversation going.
If this resonated with you or made you feel seen, share it. And if you’re a provider, let this be a reminder: the “small stuff” your patients mention might be the big stuff they’re afraid to talk about.
